I’ve been making art since I can remember, and I’ve been painting since I was about 15. Not surprisingly, painting is one of my absolute favorite things to do. Life happens though, and sometimes painting takes a backseat to other tasks and chores. I love making my graphic prints (NOT a chore!), and admittedly sometimes it’s easier to sit down at the computer and design prints than it is to make a mess at the easel. However, since starting Wild Blue Dream, I’ve decided that I need a little bit of a kick in the butt to paint more.
For several months I’ve been religiously following Artists Helping Artists, a podcast for artists full of all kinds of useful tips. As artists, I think that we all struggle sometimes with motivation. Leslie Saeta, The host of Artists Helping Artists, has challenged her listeners to join her in painting 30 paintings in 30 days. The point is not to create 30 “finished” or sale-worthy paintings, but simply to commit to painting every day and to break out of the habit of making excuses. The point is to put the brush on the canvas and make something! Leslie encourages her listeners as part of the challenge to post each of their paintings on her blog (in addition to their own). As of this writing, there are over 700 participants in 20 countries!
Here’s her map of the participants:
I am so excited to be participating in something so big! I am also psyched to be pushing myself by doing this, and to be publicly committing to this. You, my readers, are going to hold me accountable just by reading this blog post (and hopefully keeping up with the paintings I am going to post).
So starting on September 1st, I will be painting 30 paintings in 30 days! I will need to double up a couple of times, as I’m the matron of honor in a good friend’s wedding and my sister will be visiting later in the month. Leslie says it’s ok if you miss a few, but I think if I’m going to commit to this, I’m doing 30 paintings, even if I don’t do exactly one painting on each day.
Leslie suggests picking a theme for the paintings, to make it easier to decide what to paint. Shockingly, I have never painted plein air (outside) in Colorado, even though I have lived here for 10 years! So my theme is going to be “Plein Air Colorado”. I think September should be the perfect time to do it, since we’ll see a dramatic change in the landscape over the month with fall moving in. Plus, the weather should finally be dryer! I think some paintings will be landscapes, but I may also do some nature detail paintings. Most likely, most/all of the paintings will be painted in Summit County, where I live. If any Summit County locals (or people who just like Summit County!) have any favorite places they’d like to see depicted, please let me know in the comments below! I do plan to sell the paintings that I am happy with at the end, and they will be posted here in my shop when they become available. Most of the paintings will be 8″x10″, to keep the challenge manageable for me – but this also means they will be relatively inexpensive for you to purchase!
If any other artists out there want to join me, sign up here! Wish me luck!
